Friday, January 30, 2009 at 09:01AM Two Tips for Getting Your Life in Balance and Going All-In at the Same Time
Steve Roesler of All Things Workplace is a wiseguy and as a consultant he knows a thing or two about time management. In his post Making a Difference with Differences, he nails it:
I don't believe in "Time Management." Time is finite and unchanging; one has to be clear about priorities and manage those.
Whether you're life balance challenges land inside the workplace or outside, here are two tips to get you started in setting your priorities:
Know What You Value:
Without values, we run from task to task like we're floating in a rudderless dinghy. Lining up your personal values with your workplace's values allows you to find the water leaks. At work if your actions and tasks don't correspond to big picture vision and goals of any given project, you've got a water leak. And leaks spring other leaks that chip away at your personal values in the areas of family, relationships, fitness and money.
Aligning your values with your doings will illuminate what's a right action and what's a distraction.
Get Agreement:
In your workplace you're likely doing the job of three people these days. If you're serious about setting priorities and creating more balance, i.e. more ease, satisfaction and joy, you're going to need to be transparent and ask for support in making a course correction.
And now you have a tool: You know what you value, you know what your workplace values, and you can now bring attention to the water leaks and distractions that slow productivity. You'll be all-in with your boss, and all-in with yourself.
